Winding Waters Chapter, NSDAR, is a vibrant, active chapter of nearly 80 women who are passionate about community service, preserving history, educating children, as well as honoring and supporting those who serve our nation.
Our chapter activities include marching in the Brooksville Annual Veterans Day Parade, participating in Wreaths Across America every December, supporting the five Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) schools and colleges across Appalachia, and providing scholarship funds for indigenous students and schools, including:
- Chemawa Indian School – Salem, Oregon
- Bacone College – Muskogee, Oklahoma
We sponsor the annual DAR Good Citizens Award and History Essay contests. We also support the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) programs at Hernando, Central, and F.W. Springstead High Schools. Our members dedicate many hours to community service and to our Service for Veterans Committee, which serves the wounded and disabled veterans and their families at James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, Haley’s Cove, and Fisher House.
History
Winding Waters Chapter, NSDAR, of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) is named for one of Florida’s oldest natural attractions, “Weeki Wachee Springs,” which is located in Hernando County.
Scientific research shows that Weeki Wachee Springs and the Weeki Wachee River, which is formed by these spring waters, were known in prehistoric times.
In a more recent period, the spring and river were used by indigenous peoples and other traders as a source of food, water, and transportation. Indigenous burial mounds are found on the shores of the river.
The river received its name from the early Seminole Nation, who called it “Weeki Wachee,” which in English means Winding Waters.
