The Osceola Chapter, NSDAR has been actively involved in the Bradenton area since our inception. As part of our 90th and 95th birthdays, we delved into newspaper and chapter archives, as well as numerous internet searches to find out more about our chapter and it’s long history.
Our charter, which was originally thought lost, was located just in time for our 90th birthday in 2016. It was located at the Manatee County Library, given by our chapter for safekeeping. Our early members traveled between Bradenton and places north, and they wanted to ensure the charter remained safe from hurricanes. The original charter, previously displayed at the main library branch, has been returned to the chapter and is being restored. We have a replica which is proudly displayed at all our chapter meetings, just as it was in the early days.
Replica of our original charter which was located in the Manatee County Library in 2016 after having been “lost” for many decades.
Throughout our history, members have donated items to the DAR Museum, such as the following:
- March 1957 – a coconut shell ladle with silver handle was donated by Mrs. Barnes and was accepted at the DAR Museum. Washington is accredited for having drank from it at Valley Forge.
- November 1961 – a plate with Martha Washington’s picture was donated to the DAR Museum by Mrs. Myers.
- November 1968 – Mrs. Romine presented a lovely shawl.
